MacPhail Spotlight Series: Music for Change – Protest music through centuries and across continents
This MacPhail Spotlight Series concert is a reflection of our times. Faced with the twin challenges of a global pandemic and the legacy of systemic racism in our country, we kept asking ourselves how we could make a meaningful artistic contribution for our community in the Twin Cities.
I am pleased that with the help of our fabulous faculty and staff, we put together an evening of “Protest Music from across centuries and continents”, with music connected to the European Revolutions from 1848, the Civil Rights Movement, the Hip Hop era as well as original creation reflecting the present time. The roster of composers and creators include Robert Schumann, Public Enemy, Terrell Woods, and Christopher Rochester. The final piece is an arrangement of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come”, involving all Spotlight performers through a video/audio collage. While we acknowledge the tremendous challenges of the present, we hope that this project will also offer inspiration, hope, and strength to fight for a better, more just future.
